Module description: This module explores the rise of Armenian Istanbul by examining the life and times of Istanbul’s first great Armenian historian, translator of religious and secular works, author and intellectual, the polymath Eremia Chelebi K‘eomurchean. Students are offered an entrée into early modern Ottoman history by means of Eremia’s long-neglected biography, why he mattered and why he still matters. Among his important works, Eremia produced a history of the Ottoman Empire from its very beginnings through the end of the 17th century.
