Module Description: This module focuses on imperial Russia and its entanglement in the South Caucasus in the 19th century that also facilitates understanding of the Russian empire as situated in global context. Students will learn about how the Russian empire incorporated such vast and diverse territories, resources, and peoples into an imperial system of state service and economic exchange. Major factors in the process are identified and discussed, including the role of violence (military campaigns and occupation), political control by means laws and administration; and the political economy of weights, measures, and money.
