The ASN World Convention will be back in person at Columbia University, New York, on May 18-20, 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Key Points<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

*Following two highly successful Zoom Conventions in 2021 and 2022, the ASN World Convention is returning to Columbia University for a three-day in-person event to be held right after the graduation (Commencement) ceremonies on campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

*The Convention is welcoming five different types of proposals: Individual Paper Proposal, Panel Proposal, Rooundtable Proposal, Book Panel Proposal, Film Proposal. Paper and panel proposals will be based on written papers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

*All panel chairs will be selected by the Program Committee, although exceptions are possible. Registration fees will be waived for discussants, unless they are making a presentation on a different panel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

*Applicants will be notified of the status of their proposal between January 15-30, 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Scope of the Convention<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ASN World Convention, which brings together 750+ scholars from 50+ countries annually, welcomes proposals on a wide range of topics related to nationalism, national identity, ethnicity, indigenous and racialized groups, conflict and migration in regional sections of Central, Southern and Eastern Europe, and cross-regional sections in nationalism studies and migration\/diaspora studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the thematic sections on the War in Ukraine, populism\/radicalism, historical and political memory, indigenous and racialized groups, popular themes over the years have included gender, language, religion, EU integration\/exit, security, nationalism and the pandemic, energy politics, parties and elections, youth, media, and civil society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Disciplines represented include political science, history, anthropology, sociology, international studies, security studies, area studies, economics, geography, literature, and other fields of the humanities and social sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Applying to the Convention: Five Categories<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

*Accepted individual paper proposals will be included in panels created by the Program Committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

*A panel proposal is comprised of up to four panelists whose presentations are based on written papers, as well as a discussant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

*A roundtable proposal includes four presentations not based on written papers and generally addresses ongoing events (such as a recent election or protest) or issues pertaining to research methods and challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022A book panel proposal is based on a monograph published in 2021, 2022 or early 2023. Edited volumes have fewer chances of being accepted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022Film proposals will be considered for documentaries produced between 2019-2023 (since the pandemic has not allowed us to show films since 2019).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Applying to the Convention: Guidelines<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a nutshell: applicants may not appear on more than two panel proposals (three if one is a book panel) and may not present more than one paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

*Only ONE paper proposal per applicant will be considered. If your name appears on more than one paper as either single author or co-author, you will be asked to choose which proposal you want the Program Committee to consider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

*Proposals for panels, roundtables or book panels do not include a chair, although exceptions can be made The Convention Program Committee will select all the chairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
