YCIE is dedicated to promoting international academic and research cooperation in the social sciences and humanities across Armenia and the wider region. The Y-Conference brings together scholars who work in or focus on the Caucasus and Eurasia to present their latest research and discuss their ongoing projects. Conceived as an inclusive and safe space, the conference fosters dialogue across academic disciplines and national borders \u2013 a gathering where new concepts and collaborative projects can emerge and take shape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The theme of the third Y-Conference is <strong><em>EMPIRES<\/em><\/strong>. In times of intensifying debates on the rise of neo-imperialism(s) and the return to empire, we want to bring together cutting-edge scholarship from the humanities and social sciences for an interdisciplinary and timely exploration into empires and their current afterlives. Though the waning empires of the early 20th century ultimately appeared to give way to the emergence of modern nation-states, empires as a political, socio-cultural, technoscientific, and mnemonic entity have not ceased to exert power over the present not only as conflict-ridden \u201cshatterzones\u201d (Omer Bartov) and lingering \u201cphantom borders\u201d (Karl Schl\u00f6gel) but also \u201cimperial formations\u201d (Ann Laura Stoler), borderlands, and everyday imperialism. They transpire as systems of power that sustain social, economic and racial(ized) hierarchies, govern religious and interethnic differences and inform both our socio-cultural practices and historico-political knowledge production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From historically-grounded studies on past imperial entities \u2013 Ottoman, Persian, Habsburg or Romanov \u2013 to contemporary debates on \u201cself-denying empires\u201d (Ronald G. Suny) and the condition of the \u201cpost-empire\u201d (Jeremy Walton), scholars have underscored that the imperial continues to structure our understanding of the past, our positioning in the present and our imagination of political futures. In a world where imperial memory is selectively mobilized to make or unmake claims to hegemony and territory, we invite scholars to engage with empires as historical formations, political projects, socio-cultural imaginaries, and enduring legacies through which power, belonging, memory, and knowledge are governed and hegemonized but also renegotiated and contested. Crucially situated in the Caucasus, a region historically shaped by the convergence of competing imperial presence(s), the Y-Conference serves as an ideal venue to embark on a geographic and epistemological decentering of empires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Topics may include, but are not limited to, the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Histories and aftermaths of empires;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Empires as sites and systems of governing interethnic and interreligious difference;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Imperial knowledge production and digital regimes of knowledge;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Embodiments and emplacements of empire;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Politics of memory, nostalgia, and the political mobilization of imperial pasts;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Natural and social sciences under empires and beyond;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Imperial spheres of influence, phantom borders, and emerging forms of neo-imperialism;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Imperial transport and mobilities;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>De-imperialization and alternative political imaginaries;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dark enlightenment, empire, and technical democracy;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Agency of non-imperial actors operating within and beyond the imperial paradigm.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Comparing narratives, comparing (neo)imperialism<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Steering committee<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/cercec.ehess.fr\/membres\/elodie-gavrilof\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Elodie Gavrilof<\/a> (CERCEC\/EHESS), <a href=\"https:\/\/yerevancenter.org\/team\/zhanna-jeanne-kormina\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jeanne Kormina<\/a> (YCIE), <a href=\"https:\/\/yerevancenter.org\/team\/andrei-kuznetsov\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Andrei Kuznetsov<\/a> (YCIE), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zmo.de\/en\/people\/david-leupold\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">David Leupold<\/a> (Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient Berlin).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to Apply<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>All materials must be submitted in English via the Submit button below.
