IREX Fellowship opportunity for Georgian and Armenian university administrators

Fully funded international fellowship and training opportunity for mid- and senior-level managers in selected universities across Eurasia and Africa.

Since 2002, IREX ( http://www.irex.org ) has been delivering the University Administration Support Program (UASP) with funding from the Carnegie Corporation of New York. The UASP’s Fellowship in Research Management supports the development of university research management capacity at select public universities in Eurasia and Africa. A new application cycle has opened, with an April 15 deadline.

Competitive applicants should be mid- to senior-level research managers or hold another university position related to research management (e.g. research administrators, principal investigators, accountants).
The program has two main components:1. Fellowships in Research Management (6 weeks in the United States): Four weeks are spent collaborating with a research management counterpart at a US university, observing practice and building a Research Administration Implementation Plan (practical workplan for implementing a research management practice or reform at the home institution) or a Comparison Study (outline of key aspects of the observed practice and its applicability to the home context). The university placement is book-ended by two weeks of intensive training and facilitated reflection in Washington, DC.2. Grants and Post-Fellowship Engagement: UASP Fellows are eligible to compete for grants to support follow on activity to kickstart a research administration project in their home institutions, to attend relevant national and international conferences or to provide a research grant to a faculty member from their home institution.

June 18-29, 2018

The Summer Seminar on Nationalism, Religion and Violence (June 18-29, 2018) organized by the Charles University in Prague and Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, supported by the CEFRES–French Research Center in Humanities and Social Sciences, School of Slavonic and East European Studies (UCL), University of Birmingham, Humboldt University of Berlin and the Institute for the Study of Strategic Regions is ready to launch its sixth year with a special focus on the topics of ethnic and religious diversity, migration, and transformation. A key goal of the Summer Seminar is to contribute in a substantial way to the study of violence and to catalyze the growth of the study of violence as a field.

CfA: The Central Asia – Azerbaijan Fellowship Program

Spring 2018
(January 15 – June 15, 2018)

The George Washington University – Elliott School of International Affairs’ Central Asia Program (CAP) welcomes applications for its Central Asia – Azerbaijan Fellowship Program.

The Central Asia-Azerbaijan Fellowship Program (CAAFP) is intended for young professionals – scholars, government officials, policy experts, human rights and political activists – who want to enhance their research and analytical skills and seek to become public policy leaders in their respective countries. More generally, the fellowship program seeks to provide a platform for the exchange of ideas and to build lasting intellectual networks among the Central Asian, Azerbaijani, and U.S. scholarly and policy communities.

CAAFP fellows will spend five months in residence at GW, where they will participate in tailor-made programs and be introduced to U.S. policy and expert communities in both Washington, DC and New York. Fellows are required to attend seminars, workshops and training sessions, to write one policy brief on a predetermined theme, and to present their research at two public seminars. Throughout their fellowship, fellows will be mentored by program faculty affiliates.

Three fellows will be selected for Spring 2018. Fellows will be awarded a monthly stipend of $3,000 (subject to taxes). Travel to and from Central Asia to Washington, DC will also be covered.

The theme for the Spring 2018 term is: “New Urban Phenomena in Central Asia: City Migration, Landscapes, Socioeconomic Niches, and Cultures”

Global Exploration for Educators Organization

Founded in 2007, Global Exploration for Educators Organization (GEEO) is a 501c3 non-profit organization that has sent over 1600 teachers abroad on adventurous travel programs. With GEEO educators can earn professional development credits and optional graduate credit while seeing the world. GEEO’s trips are 7 to 21 days in length and are designed and discounted to be interesting and affordable for teachers. In addition to amazing tour leaders, many of the programs are accompanied by university faculty that are experts on the destination. GEEO also provides teachers educational materials and the structure to help them bring their experiences into the classroom. The trips are open to all nationalities of K-12 and university educators, administrators, pre-service teachers, retired educators, as well as educators’ guests.

ANNC: Islamic Codicology Intensive Short Course

The Islamic Manuscript Association, together with the Thesaurus Islamicus Foundation, Cambridge University Library, and the University of Cambridge’s HRH Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Centre of Islamic Studies, announces its Tenth Annual Intensive Introduction to Islamic Codicology Course, which will be held from 3-7 October 2016 at the Cambridge University Library.

This intensive five-day course will introduce the study of Islamic manuscript codices as physical objects, or the archaeology of the Islamic book. Daily illustrated lectures will provide an overview of writing supports, the structure of quires, ruling and page layout, bookbinding, ornamentation, tools and materials used in book making, and the paleography of book hands. Participants may choose to register for hands-on sessions during which they will examine Islamic manuscripts from Cambridge University Library and complete a series of practical exercises on manuscript description.

The course will be taught by Professor François Déroche, holder of the Chair of History of the Qur’an, Text and Transmission at the Collège de France, and Professor Nuria Martínez de Castilla Muñoz, Professor of the Codicology and History of the Manuscript Book in the Islamicate World, École Pratique des Hautes Études, both leading scholars of Islamic codicology and palaeography.

University of Bristol Sanctuary Scholarship Scheme

**Deadline of 30 June 2016**

Students are eligible to apply for the Sanctuary Scholarship if they meet the academic course requirements for their chosen course and fall into one of the following status groups:

• an Asylum Seeker – a person who has made a claim within the UK for refugee status; a person who has been granted Humanitarian Protection or Limited Leave to Remain (formerly Discretionary Leave to Remain); this could include, for example, trafficked persons and unaccompanied asylum seeking children (UASCs) who have reached majority age;

• a Refugee – a person who has been granted refugee status by the UK Home Office;

• or the dependants of any of the above status groups, in recognition that they are also from asylum seeking or refugee backgrounds:
  • family members of an asylum-seeker whose claim is dependant on a principal applicant;
   
  • or family members of an individual with Refugee or Humanitarian Protection status who have come to the UK on a Family Reunion visa.

There are two funding Schemes and you will only be considered for support under one of the Schemes.

Your eligibility for either Scheme will be determined by your eligibility for government financial support, which is in itself determined by your immigration status.

Scheme one – full scholarship

This applies to students who have no access to UK Government student financial support. The categories of applicants who will normally fall into scheme one include:

• An Asylum Seeker.

• A person who has been granted Limited Leave to Remain (formerly Discretionary Leave to Remain);the length of leave you have remaining will not be a factor in your eligibility for the scheme.

• The dependants of any of the above status groups.

The full scholarships will:

• cover the full cost of tuition,
• provide students with a living-cost award to support living costs and accommodation for each year of study that is equivalent to – and increasing in-line with – the minimum Research Councils UK stipend rate each year (£14,296 for 2016/17).
• cover the additional costs of English language tuition support or other foundational support as required by the University for your programme of study, delivered by the Centre for English Language and Foundation Studies (CELFS).

Scheme two – partial scholarship

The partial scholarship is available to students who can access financial support from the UK government.

The amount awarded by the University will top-up the living cost funding available from the UK Government, and other funding sources, to be equivalent to – and increasing in-line with – the minimum Research Councils UK stipend rate each year (£14,296 for 2016/17).

The categories of applicants who fall into scheme two are likely to include:

• A person who has been granted Refugee status
• A person who has been granted Humanitarian Protection
• The dependants of any of the above status groups.

The amount awarded is dependent on the amount of funding you are eligible to receive from the UK Government, and your level of study:

• Undergraduate level
• Postgraduate Master’s level

• Postgraduate doctoral level.

If you are studying part-time, your Sanctuary Scholarship will be calculated on a pro-rata basis.

Undergraduate study

You must apply for the student financial support available from the UK government, which for undergraduate courses is a tuition fee loan and a maintenance loan for living costs. A Student Funding Adviser can help you with applying for government support, please contact us: student-funding@bristol.ac.uk or 0117 331 7972.

The amount awarded by the University will top-up the living cost funding available from the UK Government, and any other University of Bristol funding, to a total equal to the minimum Research Councils UK stipend rate. This amount will increase in-line with the minimum Research Council UK stipend rate each year.

Postgraduate Master’s study

The Scholarship will cover your tuition fee costs.

You must apply for the student financial support available from the UK government for help with your living costs, which for postgraduate Master’s courses is a Postgraduate Study Loan. You are expected to apply for the full £10,000 loan amount.

The amount awarded by the University will top-up the £10,000 government loan, and other University of Bristol funding, to a total equal to the minimum Research Councils UK stipend rate. This amount will increase in-line with the minimum Research Council UK stipend rate each year.

Postgraduate doctral study

For 2016/17 entry, the scholarship will cover your tuition fees and offers an award towards living costs of £14,296. The living-cost award is equivalent to – and will increase in-line with – the minimum Research Councils UK stipend rate each year.

Loans for PhD study are not currently available, however, the UK Government is finalising details of a PhD loan scheme. When the loan scheme has been finalised you will be expected to apply for the support and your Sanctuary Scholarship will be adjusted accordingly.

ENIGMA Summer School on Migration Research 2016

The “International Summer School on Migration Research” is organised within the framework of two EU-funded projects, the “Enhancing Georgia’s Migration Management” – ENIGMMA project implemented in Georgia by the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) in cooperation with the State Commission on Migration Issues of Georgia (SCMI) and the “Support to Implementation of the Mobility Partnership with Azerbaijan” – MOBILAZE project implemented in Azerbaijan by ICMPD in cooperation with the Azerbaijani state institutions involved in migration management . The Summer School will take place in Azerbaijan from 26 June – 2 July, 2016.

International academia experts from i.a. the Migration Observatory at the University of Oxford, the Sorbonne University School of Economics and the Maastricht University Graduate School of Governance as well as Azerbaijani and Georgian academia experts will be lecturing and mentoring the participants of the summer school. In total, up to 50 students from media, international law/ migration law, economy, demography and social and political sciences from Georgia and Azerbaijan as well as Georgian diaspora members can take part in the summer school which will run from 26 June to 2 July 2016. The one-week summer school will provide research-oriented, multidisciplinary and innovative academic lectures, seminars and projects on issues related to the migration situations and migration policies in Georgia, Azerbaijan and the EU. Teaching will be accompanied by research work, projects and discussions.

Carnegie Research Fellowships

The National Council for Eurasian and East European Research is pleased to announce the competition for the Carnegie Research Fellowship Program in the United States for the 2015-2016 academic year. Scholars of the humanities and social sciences from eligible regions may apply for individual, non-degree research opportunities at universities and institutes in the United States. This competition selects university faculty, researchers, advanced graduate students, and scholars in the social sciences and humanities from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine. All fellows will conduct research on specific topics in the social sciences and humanities, write a 15 to 30 page academic paper upon the fellow’s return home, and deliver lectures with the goal of contributing to the further development of higher education and scholarship in their regions. The Carnegie Research Fellowship Program (CRFP) is administered by the National Council for Eurasian and East European Research (NCEEER) in collaboration with the American Councils for International Education: ACTR/ACCELS (American Councils). Participants in the CRFP will conduct research in the United States for four months.

Participants in the CRFP will receive the following: 1) round-trip airfare from their home cities to their host universities in the United States; 2) a pre-departure orientation, and an orientation program in Washington D.C.; 3) a monthly stipend; 4) health insurance; and 5) access to libraries and archives, and alumni activities.

4 PhD fellowships in the field of Caspian Studies (Dublin City University)

The Institute for International Conflict Resolution and Reconstruction at Dublin City University is looking for 4 PhD researchers in the framework of the project Around the “Caspian: a doctoral training for future experts in development and cooperation with focus on the Caspian region’ (CASPIAN 2015-19)”  funded by an MSCA grant of the European Union in the context of Horizon 2020.

Eurasia / South Asia Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program (Tea)

US Embassy in Georgia announces call for “The Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program” (TEA) providing international teachers with unique opportunities to develop expertise in their subject areas, enhance their teaching skills, and increase their knowledge about the United States. TEA consists of a six-week non-degree, non-credit customized academic program  including  seminars  on  new  teaching methodologies,  curriculum development, lesson planning, and instructional technology. Scholarship Programme for Young Researchers from European Neighbouring Countries

Coimbra Group Universities have been providing, since 1999, young researchers from the European Neighbourhood with the opportunity to spend a short stay at a Coimbra Group Univerrsity to carry out part of their research work. Since 2014, the Coimbra Group Scholarship Programme for young researchers from the European Neighbourhood  includes countries on the Southern and Eastern shores of the Mediterranean:  Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Syria and Tunisia. 2 PhD fellowships in the field of Caspian Studies (Tallinn University)

Announced by the Tallinn University of Technology, Department of International Relations in the frame of the Marie Sklodowska Curie Innovative Training Network project: “Around the Caspian: a Doctoral Training for Future Experts in Development and Cooperation with Focus on the Caspian Region (2015-2019)”.

The Department of International Relations, at the Tallinn School of Economics and Business Administration is looking for perspective candidates with a background in economics/social sciences and with an interest in the Caspian region (Russia, Caucasus, Central Asia, Iran). Ideally, they should know one of the regional languages but willingness to learn it as part of their fellowship is also acceptable. Successful candidates will be employed as junior researchers and enrolled as PhD students to complete a PhD thesis related to one of the following two topics within the contract period of 3 years. They will also undergo complementary training in two of our project partners and will have a budget to work on their personal development.

Topic 1 is intended to critically engage with Western-based definitions of welfare and social policies to discuss whether current models of welfare and neoliberal approaches can be imported to the region or if new approaches, which offer a nuance of existing theory, show an alternative way of conceiving social policies in the region.

Topic 2 should focus on formal and informal mechanisms to manage marketing, business, investment and risk in the Caspian region.

Methodology for both topics can be negotiate and may range from qualitative to quantitative but can also be mixed.

Eligibility and technical information

Candidates of any nationality and residence are eligible to apply as long as they meet the following criteria:

• Minimal qualifications: candidates must be eligible for doctoral studies in Estonia and have a Master in a relevant topic completed by Spring 2015
• Maximum seniority allowed: candidates must have less than 4 years (full-time equivalent) of research experience after their Master’s degree. This means that, from the moment they have completed their Master’s, they may have held research position but for a total of less than 48 months
• Mobility clause: candidates must not have been resident or carried out activities in Estonia for more than 12 months in the past three years

UConn Archaeological Field School in Armenian Prehistory, Armenia (summer)

Archaeological Field School in Armenian Prehistory*
Open to all class years

The Program

Students will participate in archaeological excavations and environmental reconstructions at a Stone Age site in Armenia that documents a variety of important milestones in human biological, cognitive, and cultural evolution. Nor Geghi 1 is situated in the Hrazdan Gorge just north of the capital Yerevan. The site documents the evolution and behavior of late Middle Pleistocene hominins between 400,000–300,000 years ago. In addition, an archaeological survey of the Hrazdan Gorge and its surroundings will be conducted. Through this program, you will gain an exciting new perspective on archaeology and prehistory and the chance to experience a rich and vibrant culture, while working side by side with world-renowned specialists and Armenian students from Yerevan State University.

The Academics

Students will enroll in  ANTH 3990, Fieldwork in Archaeology, for 6 honors credits during the summer term. The goals of this program are to: a) help students develop a firsthand knowledge of archaeological and geological methods and how archaeologists construct and test hypotheses; b) gain a new appreciation of science and its application in human evolution and paleoanthropology; c) provide students an intellectual and cultural experience beyond the confines of the U.S.A.; and d) challenge prior assumptions about the people and cultures of the Caucasus.

This program is designed to train students in archaeological excavation and recording techniques. Firsthand participation in all aspects of the field school, including excavation and site survey, as well as laboratory techniques such as artifact preparation, measurement, illustration, and analysis is required.

The Experience

While this project will provide UConn students with an exciting, new perspective on archaeology and prehistory, and the chance to experience a rich and vibrant culture, it is also designed to help train a new generation of Armenian prehistorians. As such, Armenian students from Yerevan State University (YSU) will work side by side with our team members. Participants will live in a house in Yerevan where breakfast and dinner will be served; lunch will be eaten in the field. Yerevan is a sprawling capital with numerous museums, restaurants, and cultural attractions. Knowledge of Armenian or Russian, while helpful, is not required

International Organization

This field school will be operated as a subset of a larger international research project on the prehistoric human occupation in the Hrazdan River Gorge and its surroundings*, and is co-directed by Prof. Keith Wilkinson, Winchester University, and Boris Gasparian, Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography, Armenia. Other participants in this project include specialists from Oxford University (UK), University of Sheffield (UK), Royal Holloway University London (UK), Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre (UK), Yerevan State University (Armenia), Universidad de La Laguna (Spain), Simon Fraser University (Canada), and University of Wollongomng (Australia). Students will have the opportunity to interact and work with several of these specialists during the program.

The European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR) regularly organizes summer schools for PhD candidates in political science. The “ECPR Summer School in Methods and Techniques” planned on 24 July – 9 August 2014 in Ljubljana provides high quality up-to-date training in a broad range of specially selected methods across the whole spectrum of approaches employed within the social sciences.

In line with its main objective to support promising young researchers from the South Caucasus, ASCN offers 4 PhD students in social sciences from Universities in Georgia and Armenia the opportunity to participate in this 2-week Summer School.

Scholars must choose one module from the courses B01 to B11 or 2 modules from C01 to C12 and D01 to D10 as described on the course list of the summer school website. International Summer School: Peace & Security in the South Caucasus

This summer, spend four weeks in Tbilisi, Georgia studying the politics, culture, and history of the South Caucasus; gain new insight into the complex factors shaping current events; live with specially selected host families; and engage in dynamic discussions with local activists and experts committed to fostering peace throughout the region

The academic program provides approximately twenty-two hours per week of in-class instruction. It consists of a major course exploring the politics of the South Caucasus, a minor course in society and culture and an introductory language course. The major course covers topics such as modern political history of the region, security issues, state building and democratization. The society and culture course addresses issues of nationalism, religion, gender and identity. The language course offers the opportunity to study basic Georgian, Russian or Chechen based on the participant’s preference. The annual National Minorities and Border Regions Summer School, an intensive two-week programme of postgraduate-level study in national minorities and border regions studies, will be held between the 19th and 29th of August in Flensburg, Germany. The European Centre for Minority Issues (ECMI) invites applications for the Summer School from junior scholars and practitioners from all over the world.
History

The progress of European history has linked many national minorities to state borders. Not only did the territorial changes of the last two centuries alter the sovereignty of the European states, but also served to shape the identities and allegiances of the people living within the border regions. Many minority groups in the border regions of Europe continue to identify with the majority groups in bordering states. Most in recent years, many kin-states have also strengthened the ties with their kin-minority groups across borders. Although such ties remain a source of conflict in some parts of Europe, they are increasingly valued for their role in preserving European cultural diversity, improving the living conditions of minority groups in border regions, and stimulating inter-state relations and cross-border cooperation. In the context of the current discussions over the future of the European Union, national minorities in border regions represent a resource for deepening European integration.

Aim
The ECMI Summer School aims to set out the conceptual and normative approaches for the study of national minorities in border regions and to explore their different applications in relation to current arrangements across Europe. By the end of the summer school, the students will be able to critically evaluate the institutional successes and failures regarding the accommodation of minority groups along the border regions of the European states. Upon completion of the Summer School, the participants will receive certificates of participation.

Speakers
Researchers from ECMI will be joined by distinguished international scholars, local politicians and representatives of minority groups from the Danish-German border region. Drawing on the effective collaboration between Germany and Denmark in the fields of minority accommodation and cross-border cooperation, as well as ECMI’s research and policy consulting expertise, its engagement in conflict resolution, competence development and institution building in Kosovo and Georgia, and the empirical and normative expertise of the speakers, the Summer School promises a comprehensive examination of Europe’s national minorities in border regions. The European Centre for Minority Issues (ECMI) invites applications for the Summer School from junior scholars and practitioners from all over the world. NMBR Summer School 2012 hosted 20 participants from 14 different countries. The Georgian National Museum with the support of Shota Rustaveli Scientific Foundation presents the International Dmanisi Summer School on Georgian studies – a field of humanities covering Georgian history, religion, linguistics and culture.

The Georgian National Centre of Manuscripts is organizing third International Summer School – “Georgian Script” from 16th to 25th July 2013 in Tbilisi, Georgia.

The Summer School is intended for foreign researchers and students interested in Georgian history and culture, especially in Georgian script and manuscript heritage, and have a general interest in medieval studies.
The aims of the Kartvelological Summer School “Georgian Script” is to promote Georgian script as an important achievement of Georgian culture at an international level; to popularize the Kartvelological sciences, focusing on the multi-faceted, multi-national foundations of Georgian manuscript culture; and to inspire and develop future international cooperation among the Centre and Summer school attendees.

First Democratic Republic of Georgia – Summer School at the National Archives of Georgia 2013

“National Archives of Georgia” with the support of the “Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation” will organize Summer School on the subject of the First Democratic Republic of Georgia (1918-1921). Summer School will be held in Tbilisi, at the National Archives of Georgia on 17-23 July, 2013.

15 participants, among them 10 foreign and 5 local citizens will be selected. Working languages will be Georgian and English (lectures will be directed in Georgian with English simultaneous translation).

Leading Georgian experts will read for attendees 23 lectures during 7 days. There will be 5 modules: Democratic Institutes; Republic and Foreign Countries; Military Affairs; Economic, Culture, Religion, Human Rights, Mass-Media; Practice. Sharing of opinions in frames of roundtable debates will be organized. The participants will be taken to cultural sightseeing tours, museums; they will get acquainted with primary archival sources, photos and cinematography of the respective period.

As far as Tbilisi was the center and even capital (during Caucasian Diet) of the region, all possible archival materials on Caucasus are concentrated at the National Archives of Georgia. Though, most of the materials are not yet explored by Armenian, Azerbaijani, East European and specifically by western scholars. Therefore there are some substantial gaps in their researches. Conclusions of various Caucasian scholars are controversial to each other to say the least. Most of the West European scholars base their conclusions on European archival materials, not always knowing what the reality in the region was. On the other hand, Georgian scholars hitherto have not had an access to the archives of The Great Powers.

We aim to gather leading experts or prospective researchers of those countries together, in order to enable them attend lectures and discuss various problems on the roundtable after each module.

The summer school aims to attract scholars from European and Non-European universities, research institutes, independent networks, with a special focus on young researchers. Junior researchers, teaching assistants, PhD students are thus warmly invited to submit their paper proposals. Also we can afford participation of students, interested in politics, history, source studies and related fields.

The summer school calls for proposals for individual papers to be presented in panels, created by the Scientific Committee. The Scientific Committee has discreet right to contact short-listed candidates for holding an interview in order to clarify some additional details. Workshop: Virtual Heritage School on Digital Cultural Heritage (3D documentation, knowledge repositories and creative industries)

The workshop focuses on advanced technologies applied to Cultural Heritage (CH) research, in particular digital data acquisition (photogrammetry, laser scanning and Structure-from-Motion), the use of open-source software for data post-processing, metadata standards, knowledge repositories and creative industries. Survival Georgian Course

The American Language Center at American Councils is pleased to offer Survival Georgian, an 8 week course (1.5 hours/twice a week) in partnership with the renowned Nana Shavtvaladze Language School.  This crash course is designed to build basic communication skills for everyday situations.  Learn how to order food, give directions, shop and bargain, speak to your landlord, and make new friends. 2013 Summer Research Laboratory at Illinois

The Summer Research Laboratory (SRL) on Russia, Eastern Europe, and Eurasia is open to all scholars with research interests in the Russian, East European and Eurasian region for eight weeks during the summer months from June 10 until August 2. The SRL provides scholars access to the resources of the University of Illinois Slavic collection within a flexible time frame where scholars have the opportunity to seek advice and research support from the librarians of the Slavic Reference Service (SRS).  Graduate students and junior scholars will also have opportunity to attend a specialized workshop on Scholarly and Literary Translation from June 10-15, 2013.

The deadline for grant funding is April 15 and is fast approaching! REEEC will continue to receive applications for the Summer Research Lab after the grant deadline, but housing and travel funds will not be guaranteed.

For graduate students, the SRL provides an opportunity to conduct research prior to going abroad and extra experience to refine research skills.  Students will also have the opportunity of seeking guidance from specialized librarians skilled in navigating resources pertaining to and originating from Russia, Eastern Europe, and Eurasia.

The SRS is an extensive service that provides access to a wide range of materials that center on and come from: Russia, the Former Soviet Union, Czech and Slovak Republics, Former Yugoslavia, Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, and Romania. The International & Area Studies Library, where the Slavic reference collections are housed, contains work stations for readers, a collection of basic reference works, and current issues of over 1,000 periodicals and 110 newspapers in Western and area languages. The Slavic Reference Service provides access to several unique resources pertaining to the Russian, East European and Eurasian region.  Currently, there are plans at the University of Illinois’ to become the first library in the Western Hemisphere to gain access to the Russian State Library’s Electronic Dissertations Database, which contains the full text of nearly 1 million dissertations in a wide variety of fields. In addition, the SRS provides access to

*         the only copy of the famous 594-volume Turkestanskii Sbornik  of materials on Central Asia prior to 1917 available outside Uzbekistan;

*         recent direct acquisitions from Central Asia which include the complete national bibliography of Kazakhstan (2002-2010) and the complete digitized national bibliography of Uzbekistan (1917-2009), both of which are not held by any other U.S. library;

*         perhaps the most complete collection of Russian Imperial provincial newspapers (gubernskie vedomosti) in North America; and

*         extensive print, digital, and microform holdings relating to Eastern Europe, including rare materials acquired via Keith Hitchins and other noted scholars.

Summer School: Postsocialist Cultural Studies: Methodology and Research

Program description:
More than twenty years have passed since the collapse of the Soviet Union, the end of the Cold War, and the dispersal of the global socialist movement. Since then, we have been living in a post-world that is variously characterized as postsocialist, post-Marxist, postmodernist, and postcolonialist. This new condition has challenged scholars to find appropriate concepts, theories, and methods. In the 1990s, such theories as “transition”, “path-dependency”, and “multiple modernities” became popular among post-scholars. Over the decades, these concepts have revealed their problematic character. Empirical studies of the cultural condition of postsocialism in its most problematic manifestations – class, gender, generational, regional, ethnic, confessional, etc. – reveal continuities, gaps, and hybridizations that were not predicted by ideologues. But the concept of post-socialism is still in demand. In various forms that range from memory to inertia, the socialist legacy makes its impact on cultural processes, social troubles, and the political quests in the post-Soviet and global space.

In our problematic world, methodologies and reality illuminate and challenge each other. The Summer School will discuss the emerging concepts and visions that inform our research of the world after socialism.

Special emphasis on Georgian singing–but also with some great South African, Corsican and American folk songs. Malkhaz Erkvanidze, in the US at the end of a three-week tour with his Tbilisi-based choir, Sakhioba Folk Ensemble, is a world authority of Georgian polyphonic music; he will be teaching folk songs and coaching participants in Georgian instruments. Princeton doctoral candidate John Graham, a veteran of Village Harmony & Northern Harmony ensembles, will teach Georgian chants and offer workshops on improvisation and variations in Georgian singing. And Village Harmony co-director Patty Cuyler will add an exciting mix of other wonderful harmony traditions–dance songs from South Africa, amazing Corsican trio songs, and a few American shape-note songs–to the weekend.

RFP: UC Berkeley Scholars Workshop – October 28 – November 10, 2012

The Institute of Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ISEEES) at the University of California, Berkeley (UCB), in collaboration with the Centre for Advanced Studies and Education (CASE) at the European Humanities University (EHU) and the Caucasus Research Resource Centers (CRRC), is soliciting proposals from scholars in the social sciences and history from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine to participate in a two-week workshop at UCB from October 28 to November 10, 2012. The workshop is funded by a generous grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York.

A total of four scholars (“Carnegie Fellows”) will be brought to UCB for an intensive review of key literature, theoretical approaches, and methods employed in a particular field of scholarship (the “field theme”). Each Carnegie Fellow will work with a paired UCB faculty member and graduate student with knowledge of the Carnegie Fellow’s field theme to develop undergraduate and/or graduate syllabi and teaching materials, explore innovative teaching and research techniques and technologies, and prepare a field survey (with a literature review) for use by other Carnegie Fellows and scholars from the region. The language of the workshop will be English.

Airfare, hotel, and meal expenses will be paid for by ISEEES. In addition, ISEEES will either pay for or reimburse each Carnegie Fellow for up to $600 in expenses relating to purchasing, copying, or posting teaching materials. ISEEES will provide letters of invitation, but each Carnegie Fellow will be responsible for obtaining and paying for a U.S. visa.

• Citizens of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine.
• Scholars who hold the equivalent of a Ph.D.

OVERVIEW
The SSRC Eurasia Program is offering intensive workshops to enhance training in quantitative methodology and increase familiarity with existing data sets among scholars of the region with policy-relevant interests. Workshops will consist of 20 hours of directed laboratory instruction, and approximately ten hours each of supervised laboratory time (group assignments, individual research) and faculty/peer assessments for research. Evenings will be reserved for informal discussions, group projects, and optional seminars on advanced themes in sampling, index construction, and non-linear regression approaches. The workshops will be led by experienced local instructors and senior resource faculty. Each participant will present their own research project during the course of the workshop. Participants will also generate a 1-2 page policy memo highlighting their work for possible inclusion in the SSRC Eurasia Program Title VIII Policy Brief Series.

ELIGIBILITY
Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents and currently enrolled in an accredited PhD program or area studies MA program, or who have completed a Ph.D. in the last 5 years. Every applicant should have a research project with clear policy relevance. We will entertain applications from advanced scholars with clearly articulated and compelling reasons for inclusion. Applicants from the military academies and minority serving institutions are particularly welcome. We will accept participants with a wide variety of skill levels and topics. Regions and countries currently supported by the program include Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, the Russian Federation, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan. All research projects must relate as a whole or in part to one or more of these locales.

Conflict Resolution in the South Caucasus

This a unique 3-credit course offering to the South Caucasus from May 31-June 9, open to both George Mason and non-George Mason students offered through the Center for World Religions, Diplomacy and Conflict Resolution at the School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution at George Mason University. Attendees will spend time in Tbilisi and, if possible, Sukhum/Sukhumi, meet with a variety of local specialists, including academics and practitioners who will provide an inside view of each side of the conflict. Spring 2012 Scholar’s Workshop at the University of California, Berkeley

The call for proposals is being solicited by the Institute of Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ISEEES) at the University of California, Berkeley (UCB), in collaboration with the Center for Advanced Study and Education (CASE) at the European Humanities University (EHU) and the Caucasus Research Resource Centers (CRRC). The workshop is funded by a generous grant from the Carnegie Corporation of New York.

What is the Scholar’s Workshop?
Four selected scholars in the social sciences and history from Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia will participate in a two-week workshop at UCB from April 1 to April 14, 2012. These “Carnegie Fellows” will undertake an intensive review of the key literature, theoretical approaches, and methods employed in a particular field of scholarship at UCB. Each Carnegie Fellow will work with a paired UCB faculty member and graduate student with knowledge of the Carnegie Fellow’s field theme to develop undergraduate and graduate syllabi and teaching materials, explore innovative teaching and research techniques and technologies, and prepare a field survey (with a literature review). The language of the workshop will be English.

Airfare, hotel, and meal expenses will be paid for by ISEEES. In addition, ISEEES will either pay for or reimburse each Carnegie Scholar for up to $600 in expenses relating to purchasing, copying, and posting teaching materials. ISEEES will provide letters of invitation, but each Carnegie Fellow will be responsible for obtaining and paying for a U.S. visa.

International Summer School  “Geopolitics of Resources”

The International Summer School “Geopolitics of Resources” will explore political, economic, social and environmental dimensions of conflicts over water, oil, and gas in South Caucasus and Central Asia. The central question of the summer school is whether natural resources that bind the countries of these regions together but often serve as a source for tensions can lead to regional cooperation. The format of the summer school will be a mixture of lectures and seminars in the mornings as well as additional workshops on negotiation and communication skills in the afternoons. Students will also have a possibility to participate in the simulation game. The aim of this exercise is not only to provide students with the opportunity to practice decision-making skills, but also to offer them a change of perspective, thereby gaining a better understanding of factors and dynamics involved in conflict situations.

The International School of Economics at Tbilisi State University (ISET) invites full-time economics faculty from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan to participate in a three‐year professional training and development program. All costs, including participants’ travel and accommodation, will be covered by Higher Education Support Program of the Open Society Institute. English is the working language of the program.

Program Description
This three year program will focus on the theory and practice of industrial development, drawing on recent theoretical and empirical research in international trade, economic geography and international macroeconomics. The main objectives of the program are to allow participants to improve and develop their existing teaching portfolio, and to allow them to introduce new advanced courses. The program will also allow participants to improve their own research and to build professional networks among junior economic faculty and economics departments in the South Caucasus, Central Asia and Eastern Europe. The program will be taught by regional and international faculty who will introduce junior faculty from the region to a broad range of models, empirical methods and applications and practical policy issues.

During the first year, our treatment of the subject will be at the advanced undergraduate level. It is expected that any initial gap in knowledge would have to be closed during an intensive self-study phase prior to the first face-to-face meeting in July 2011. The meeting itself will combine master classes with group work, facilitating longer term research and pedagogy-focused collaboration among peers. In years two and three the same set of issues will be discussed at a higher level of sophistication, introducing more advanced theoretical and empirical tools.

America Engages Eurasia: Studies, Teaching, and Resources

A Summer Institute Sponsored by The National Endowment for the Humanities.

Building upon a successful NEH Institute of 2009 which dealt with
Russian-American cultural contacts, the 2011 institute examines the
evolution of America’s “academic” engagement with Eurasia (defined here
as including Eastern and Southeastern Europe, Russia/ the Soviet Union,
Central Asia, and the Caucasus) from the 19th century down to the
present. The historic personalities, institutions, organizations, and
research resources that collectively constituted the foundation of
Eurasian studies in America will be considered within the broad
framework of the geopolitical relations of America and Eurasia over more
than 150 years.

The Institute’s Principal Investigator Timothy Frye, and Co-Directors
Edward Kasinec and Robert Davis hope also to suggest a more broadly
applicable paradigm of area studies development in the United States
(for Middle Eastern, East Asian, African, Latin American studies, etc.),
suggesting avenues of comparative research.

Twenty-five undergraduate faculty, research librarians, curators, and
museum educators will participate in sessions led by distinguished
educators and professionals. Participants will have a hands-on
opportunity to work with the unparalleled material and academic
resources of Columbia University and the city of New York.

ArtsLink Residencies program for artists (dance, music, theater and literature) from eastern Europe and Eurasia

The ArtsLink Residencies program offers artists and arts managers from Eastern and Central Europe, Russia, Central Asia and the Caucasus a five-week residency at an established, non-profit arts organization in the US. Host organizations are selected by CEC staff from an application process open to US non-profit organizations from all fifty US states. Applicants do not need to have any contacts with organizations in the US to apply for this program.

For the 2011 Residencies Program, ArtsLink will accept applications from artists and arts managers working in dance, music, theater and literature.

ArtsLink Residencies provide artists and arts managers with a unique experience relevant to their professional and creative goals. Residencies incorporate the visiting professional into the host organization’s activities and provide interaction with local artists and organizations.

Guidelines for Applications

Eligibility

For the December 1, 2010 deadline, ArtsLink will accept Residencies applications from contemporary artists working in music, dance, theater, or literature and from arts managers and presenters at independent, non-profit and government organizations working in these artistic
disciplines. Applicants must be citizens of, and currently reside in, an eligible country. If you are living outside the region temporarily, contact ArtsLink staff to determine your eligibility. There are no age limitations. Applicants must have sufficient knowledge of English to function independently while in the US.

Undergraduate students, amateurs, and scholars are not eligible. Arts managers must be affiliated with an arts organization in the non-commercial sector. Artists seeking placement in commercial firms are also ineligible. ArtsLink Fellows from prior years are ineligible.

Review Criteria

All ArtsLink applications will be evaluated by an independent interdisciplinary review panel comprised of US arts professionals based on the following criteria:

*        Artistic or professional excellence of the applicant’s work
*        Extent to which working in a US arts organization is consistent with the applicant’s artistic vision, creative goals and professional development
*        Benefit to the applicant, at this time in his/her career, from interaction with US artists and audiences
*        Quality and feasibility of mutually-beneficial exchange with the hosting organization
*        Applicant’s plans for sharing the benefits of the exchange with artists and institutions in his/her home country
*        Applicant’s ability to meet cross-cultural challenges successfully

The selection process is extremely competitive and applicants should anticipate a highly rigorous review of their work. Applicants are advised to submit recent quality work samples on CDs and/or DVDs. Please follow carefully the instructions for submitted work samples in the
application. Applicants should make sure their work is properly labeled and that all work samples are fully and succinctly described on a separate sheet. Applications that do not include required materials will not be considered.

Schedule

ArtsLink Fellows are expected to participate for a six-week period from early October to mid November 2011. All participants – both applicants from Eastern and Central Europe, Russia, Central Asia and the Caucasus and US host organizations – must be able to accommodate this residency schedule.

The Residency includes two short sessions in New York City for all ArtsLink Fellows to meet with each other and with ArtsLink staff: one prior to the residency to orient the Fellows to the residency program and one at the conclusion to share residency experiences. The opening and closing sessions offer an important opportunity for ArtsLink Fellows to interact and strengthen contacts with colleagues in Eastern and Central Europe, Russia, Central Asia and the Caucasus.

Placement Process

Applicants who have been selected by the review panel are placed by ArtsLink staff at arts organizations across the US that can provide a residency experience appropriate to each candidate’s professional skills and goals. The candidate’s professional interests and contacts are carefully evaluated to ensure the best available opportunity for each ArtsLink Fellow. While we take Fellows’ geographical and organizational preferences into consideration, Fellows should be prepared to fulfill their residency in any of the fifty US states.

ArtsLink Residencies provide opportunities to:

*        Pursue artistic and/or professional collaborations that will enrich and enhance your work
*        Establish mutually beneficial exchange of ideas and expertise with US artists and organizations and with colleagues from Eastern and Central Europe, Russia, Central Asia and the Caucasus during ArtsLink Fellow meetings
*        Deepen your understanding of a particular artistic expression that is related to your own work
*        Create new work that draws inspiration from interaction with artists and arts professionals in the US
*        Expand professional arts management skills through work with US organizations

Financial Arrangements

ArtsLink Residency awards are made to the US host organization to cover the living and working expenses for the five-week residency. Airfare, visa expenses, health insurance, and food and lodging during the opening and closing sessions in New York are also provided by CEC ArtsLink.

The Georgian Intensive Language Workshop: Beginning Level

A 10-Day Immersion Georgian Language Course in Borjomi, Georgia

Program dates: June 14-24, 2010 (with arrival in Borjomi on June 13, and departure following classes on the afternoon of June 24)
