PhD Positions GWZO-Junior Research Group “Global Armenia/ns”

The Leibniz Institute for the History and Culture of Eastern Europe (GWZO) offers up to four PhD positions in its Junior Research Group “Global Armenia/ns. Entangled Histories of Central and Eastern Europe and the Caucasus“ (subject to the available funds).

For centuries, Armenians have shaped Eastern Europe – its societies, cultures, economies and politics. The Junior Research Group examines the entangled history of Armenians and Armenia with the societies and states of Central and Eastern Europe, and its continuing impacts in local, regional and international contexts. Using methods from comparative area studies and global history, as well as approaches from interdisciplinary Armenian studies, we explore the dynamics, scope and depth of transregional relations.

The studies deal with (1) the role of the Armenian diaspora and its networks, (2) the representation of Armenia in cultural production (literature, film and graphics), (3) the local and transnational relations of religious communities and churches, (4) the significance of Armenian actors and their global networks in international politics, and (5) the environmental history of Armenia in a comparative perspective.

With this range of topics, the junior research group aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of the influence of Armenia/ns in the societies and states of Central and Eastern Europe, and to inscribe these entangled histories into the global history of the region.

Up to four doctoral scholarships are available. The application deadline is 31 January 2025.
