Matenadaran invites scholars and researchers to participate in an interdisciplinary workshop
titled “Medical Manuscripts, Translation and Transfer of knowledge in the Transimperial
Settings”, dedicated to explore the transmission, adaptation/transadaptaion, and
transformation of medical knowledge across cultures and centuries through the study of
Armenian manuscript tradition, with the inclusion of texts in Persian, Arabic and Turkish along
with their allographic versions. This workshop seeks to foster a comprehensive understanding
of how medical knowledge was recorded, translated, and transmitted across Armenian, Greco-
Roman, and Islamic civilizations, and to examine the methodologies involved in their study.
Participants will have the opportunity to engage with case studies that trace the movement of
medical texts across languages, regions, and traditions, emphasizing both vertical (evolution
within a tradition) and parallel (cross-cultural contact) development.
