ARISC-ISAC joint course: An Archaeological Journey through the South Caucasus: A Nexus of Interaction

Course schedule: Wednesdays, September 23–October 21, 2026, 5–7pm Central/6–8pm Eastern (5 weeks). Classes meet online via Zoom with recordings available.

What does archaeology in the South Caucasus look like? Join experts in the archaeology of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia and hear about their work in this exciting region. Hear about ancient animals, burials, and more! We will discover how ancient societies lived and interacted with each other and the areas beyond the South Caucasus. After an initial introduction to the region, we will turn to specialized topics led by people who are actively involved in archaeological excavations.

Week One: September 23: Introduction to Archaeology of the South Caucasus and Medieval Memory of Landscape in Armenia and Georgia (Tasha Vorderstrasse, Manager, Continuing Education Program, ISAC)

Week Two, September 30: First millennium BCE Azerbaijan (Lara Fabian, Assistant Professor of Iranian Archaeology; Director of Undergraduate Studies, UCLA)

Week Three, October 7: Mortuary Archaeology in Armenia (Maureen Marshall, Deputy Director at Illinois Global Institute and Research Associate, Department of Anthropology, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign)

Week Four, October 14: Zooarchaeology in Azerbaijan (Hannah Lau, Assistant Professor of Anthropology, Hamilton College)

Week Five: October 21: Georgia in the First Millennium BCE (Ruth Portes, PhD candidate in Classics, Cornell University)
